Chris's Blog - Life as a Recruitment Consultant at Nigel Wright

In order to portray a real representation of the culture here at Nigel Wright, we asked some of our Recruitment Consultants to answer a series of questions about their careers and about working at Nigel Wright.

Our Sales and Marketing Managing Recruitment Consultant Chris Kent shares how Nigel Wright has supported him in his career, his advice to people looking to join our team as well as how he balances his career at Nigel Wright with life away from work.

How has Nigel Wright helped you in your career development?

I joined Nigel Wright with ten years of recruitment experience, having had a significant amount of training and development within my previous company. Even with this experience, it was refreshing that Nigel Wright didn’t presume that I knew everything and have invested in my development throughout the six years I have been here.  I have received support, training, coaching and development from members of the Board, the leadership team, from peers and from external trainers and consultants which has enabled me to act as a consultancy partner to my clients and candidates rather than simply a recruiter who provides CVs for vacancies.  This approach has been key to me being able to progress up the ranks since joining the business and becoming a member of the management team of our northern regional business.

What would your advice be to anyone looking to join us?

Key attributes that people will need to be successful are resilience, commercial acumen and an interest in learning about business, as well as a positive attitude and willingness to put in the effort.  Nigel Wright will be able to provide the tools and recruitment skills, but the attributes above will be necessary to convert the training and development into a long-term successful career.

How do you balance your career at Nigel Wright with life away from work?

We do work hard in our roles in recruitment and it is important to have a work-life balance.  As a runner, I try to get out at lunchtime a few times per week and with two young children much of my time outside of work is providing Dad’s taxi service.  Nigel Wright has a flexible approach to work-life balance and one of the most important things to me is that I am able to attend sports days, nativity plays and parents evenings (and currently to act as PE teacher during homeschooling under lockdown) without any questions asked.  With this flexibility across our business, the organisation benefits from the effort levels and time that consultants invest in their jobs, creating a fantastic culture and the opportunity to have a rewarding and progressive career.
