We are always looking for people from any industry and level, whether experienced recruiters or not, to join our growing team in the North of England. But it is a common misconception that people believe they need to have experience in recruitment to join our team. Director Richard Morgan's career story will prove that you don't have to have any prior recruitment experience to have a successful career in recruitment.
From an early age, I was pretty certain that I wanted to pursue a career in Accountancy and so chose to study Accountancy & Management at university. Upon completing this, I was able to secure a Graduate Accountancy role with an excellent employer, which supported my development towards the Professional Qualification, alongside gaining relevant work experience. So far, so good…
However, the more time I spent in the role, the more I came to realise that I wasn’t actually enjoying the content of the job and looking ahead, I came to the realisation that I wanted to do something different with my career.
What ultimately led you to change jobs/leave?
There wasn’t one specific event, it was more a build-up of frustration over a period of time. I reached the point where I felt I needed to think about what I enjoyed and aim to make a career choice based on that. For me, that included elements such as:
I spoke to a number of people whose opinions I valued, and recruitment came up as a potential avenue to explore. I had some personal experience of using a recruiter for my accountancy career and therefore, some understanding and intrigue of what the role entailed.
So, whilst all of this was taking place, I happened to receive an email from a recruitment firm, asking me if I could be interested in pursuing a career in recruitment. I decided to follow up, had some really positive discussions which further enhanced my interest, and the rest is history.
Why Nigel Wright
Nigel Wright is the second recruitment business I have worked for and having competed against Nigel Wright for three years, I decided that if you can't beat them, join them! In all seriousness, I wanted to learn how they achieved their best in market reputation and put myself in a position to work alongside great people.
I’m now in my 12th year with the business and am fortunate to have experienced significant career development during that time and to participate in our 2020 MBO.
I’m often asked why I have stayed with the business for the length of time I have, and I think it has been a combination of lots of different things. Ultimately though, I’ve found time flies in a role that has kept developing and challenging me, working (& playing) in a successful, team orientated environment, surrounded by people I enjoy being around.
How has your prior experience benefited your recruitment role?
Good question, I think it helped a little bit at the beginning as I had a little bit of network to lean on and some technical knowledge that probably gave me a bit of early credibility. This might sound bizarre but probably the biggest benefit my prior experience gave me was that it forced me to assess what I wanted to do with my career, based on what I would enjoy. Choosing recruitment has been the right choice for me, I’ve learned heaps so far and am excited about what the future has in store for all of us at Nigel Wright.
