Software Developer (C#/ SQL)

Sunderland  Permanent  Up to £65,000 Ref: 419162

Company

A well-established, Sunderland based, organisation is investing heavily in the modernisation of its technology estate. Having undergone significant systems transformation in recent years, the business is now focused on enhancing, optimising and future-proofing its internally developed applications and data platforms.
The IT team supports critical systems that underpin operations across multiple business functions. With a strong focus on modern development practices, automation, code quality and continuous improvement, the organisation is looking to strengthen its in-house development capability with experienced software developers who can drive meaningful change and challenge existing ways of working.

Role

As a Software Developer, you will play a key role in the ongoing development, support and enhancement of business-critical applications. Working closely with technical and business stakeholders, you will help modernise legacy systems, improve database performance, deliver new functionality and contribute to the overall technical direction of the development team.
Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and maintaining Windows and web-based applications using Microsoft technologies.
  • Designing and implementing integrations and APIs between internal and external systems.
  • Creating, optimising and maintaining SQL Server databases, stored procedures and reporting solutions.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving complex software and data-related issues.
  • Translating business requirements into robust technical solutions.
  • Participating in solution design, architecture discussions and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Improving development processes, deployment pipelines, source control practices and overall development standards.
  • Supporting the transition from legacy approaches to modern software engineering methodologies.
  • Producing clear technical documentation and ensuring development work meets security and data integrity standards.
This position offers the opportunity to make a genuine impact, helping to reshape and modernise an established development function while working on a diverse range of projects and systems.

Person

We are interested in speaking with experienced software developers who enjoy solving complex technical challenges and improving existing systems.
Essential experience includes:

  • Strong SQL Server development and database optimisation skills.
  • Commercial experience developing applications within the Microsoft .NET ecosystem using Visual Studio.
  • Experience with PowerShell scripting and automation.
  • Strong understanding of APIs, integrations and connected systems.
  • A proven track record within commercial software development environments.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
We would particularly welcome applications from developers who have experience modernising legacy applications, improving coding standards, implementing source control and CI/CD processes, and introducing contemporary development practices into established environments.
Desirable experience includes exposure to Microsoft technologies such as Power Platform and ERP development, although these are not essential requirements for success in the role.
This opportunity would suit either an experienced Senior Developer or a highly capable Software Developer looking to take ownership, influence technical direction and play a significant role in a business-wide technology transformation.
