The Role

Reporting into the Procurement leadership team, you will manage a portfolio of strategically critical goods spend worth approximately £50 million annually, leading complex sourcing activity and supplier relationships across key electrical infrastructure categories.

Key categories include:

  • Transformers
  • Switchgear
  • Cable and conductor
  • Electrical plant and network equipment
This is a strategic procurement role. You will lead end-to-end sourcing projects, establish long-term procurement agreements, support supplier performance, and provide commercial expertise to key business stakeholders.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Buyers to join Northern PowerGrid's Commercial team. As the business continues to invest heavily in network resilience, decarbonisation and major transformation programmes, these newly created and replacement positions will play a critical role in ensuring the secure supply of strategically important electrical equipment across the network. 

Northern Powergrid is responsible for powering everyday life for around 8 million customers across the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire. With significant investment planned through the upcoming ED3 regulatory period and continued growth across the electricity network, procurement has never been more important.

About You

The successful Senior Buyer will need a strong commercial capability and strategic purchasing experience.
You will ideally bring:

  • Proven experience managing strategic procurement activity for goods, components or technical products
  • Strong commercial acumen and experience handling significant spend portfolios
  • The ability to understand technical specifications and supplier offerings
  • Excellent attention to detail and high standards of written communication
  • Experience producing recommendation papers, business cases or approval documentation
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills
  • Confidence working within structured governance and procurement processes
  • Experience leading high-value sourcing and negotiation activity
  • MCIPS qualified, studying towards qualification, or committed to achieving accreditation
