Finance Manager
The Organisation
Nigel Wright Group is delighted to be working exclusively with Newcastle Foodbank to recruit a Finance Manager into its dedicated and passionate team.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced finance professional who wants to use their skills in a genuinely rewarding environment, helping an organisation that makes a meaningful difference to people and communities across Newcastle every day.
About Newcastle Foodbank
Established in 2013, Newcastle Foodbank has grown significantly from its original foodbank model and today describes itself as "more than a food bank". Alongside providing essential food support, the charity offers welfare guidance designed to address the underlying causes of financial hardship and help people move towards greater financial security and independence.
With an ambitious strategy focused on improving facilities, widening food choice, expanding welfare services and ensuring the voices of the people it supports help shape its future, this is an exciting time to join the organisation.
The Opportunity
This newly created Finance Manager position represents an important investment in strengthening the charity's internal finance capability.
Reporting to the Chief Executive and Treasurer, you will take ownership of key elements of financial and management accounting, providing accurate and insightful financial information to support good decision-making across the organisation.
Importantly, Newcastle Foodbank is open to considering both full-time and part-time applicants, with a three-day working week discussed as a potentially workable option for the right person.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting the preparation and delivery of management accounts and financial reporting.
- Managing budgeting, cash-flow forecasting and monitoring performance against budget.
- Maintaining the charity's accounting systems and ensuring financial information is accurate and up to date.
- Supporting grant and funder reporting.
- Managing bank accounts, transactions and key financial controls.
- Providing clear financial information to the Chief Executive, Treasurer, Finance Committee and Trustees.
- Supporting statutory reporting, charity compliance, payroll and pensions oversight.
- Working with external accountants, auditors, banks, HMRC, the Charity Commission and other professional partners.
- Identifying opportunities to improve processes and strengthen financial management across the charity.
About you
We're looking for someone who combines strong practical finance experience with the right attitude and values.
You could be part-qualified, qualified by experience or an experienced finance professional who has developed strong management accounting capability throughout your career.
Ideally, you'll bring:
- Strong management accounting experience, including budgets, forecasting and financial analysis.
- The ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues.
- Excellent attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
- Good IT skills, particularly Excel.
- Experience of Xero or another online accounting package.
- Charity finance, Charity SORP, grant accounting or charity VAT experience would be particularly valuable, although some of this experience is desirable rather than essential.
Just as importantly, you'll be someone who genuinely connects with the organisation's purpose. Newcastle Foodbank is looking for an approachable and collaborative individual who wants to become part of its team, understands the environment they are working in and is motivated by contributing to the alleviation of poverty across Newcastle.
What's on offer
• Salary: £32,000–£35,000 depending on experience and working pattern.
• Hours: Full-time or part-time options considered, including potential for a three-day working week.
• Location: Benwell, Newcastle upon Tyne. Flexible working can be considered, although initially there will be an important on-site element to build relationships and understand the organisation.
• Annual leave: 25 days plus statutory and public holidays, pro rata for part-time employees.
• Pension: NEST pension scheme with employer contribution of up to 3%, subject to a minimum 5% employee contribution.
• The opportunity to join a welcoming, community-focused organisation where your work will directly support its ability to help people experiencing hardship across Newcastle.
