Head of Technology

 Darlington  Permanent  £90,000-100,000 Ref: 420338

About the Opportunity

Shape the technology strategy of a growing, entrepreneurial business as their Technology Leader

This is an opportunity to establish technology as a genuine driver of growth, efficiency and better decision-making within an ambitious North East business.
With major investment already underway across ERP, CRM and e-commerce, the organisation is seeking a commercially minded technology leader who can bring these systems together, strengthen delivery and create a clear roadmap for automation, AI and data.

The role is hybrid working with onsite expectations c. 3 days per week

The Role

Head of Technology will take ownership of the organisation’s technology strategy and help translate existing investment into measurable commercial value.
This is broader than a traditional IT leadership position. While you will provide direction to an established in-house IT team, your primary focus will be on transformation, integration and the effective use of technology across the wider business.

Your immediate priorities will include:

  • Providing clear ownership of the technology strategy and roadmap.
  • Supporting the successful delivery, adoption and optimisation of their systems
  • Integrating ERP, CRM, e-commerce and other business-critical systems.
  • Improving the practical use, accessibility and value of business data.
  • Identifying credible opportunities to introduce automation and AI.
  • Strengthening the leadership, commercial awareness and capabilities of the existing IT function.
  • Establishing effective governance across projects, suppliers and technology investment.
  • Leading change across teams and ensuring new technology is adopted successfully.
You will work closely with the senior leadership team, remaining sufficiently close to delivery while ensuring technology decisions support the organisation’s commercial priorities and longer-term scalability.

Key Experience Required

You may already be operating as a Head of Technology, Head of IT, IT Director or technology transformation leader and be ready to take on a broader, CTO-style remit.

You will bring:

  • Experience developing and delivering a technology strategy within a growing organisation.
  • A successful record of leading significant business systems or transformation programmes.
  • Strong understanding of ERP, CRM, systems integration and data.
  • The ability to connect technology investment with commercial outcomes.
  • Experience leading organisational change and influencing senior stakeholders.
  • The judgement to balance strategic priorities with hands-on delivery.
  • The ability to lead and develop an established internal technology team.
  • Confidence managing implementation partners, specialist suppliers and other third parties.
  • Curiosity about emerging technology, including the practical application of AI and automation.
Your operating style will be pragmatic, energetic and commercially aware. You will be comfortable challenging established thinking, but equally able to listen, build trust and take people with you through change.

Next Steps

This appointment offers considerably more than ownership of an IT function. You will inherit a business that has already committed to transformation but now needs a permanent leader to provide direction, build momentum and realise the full value of that investment.

For an ambitious technology leader, it is an opportunity to define the strategy, influence the wider organisation and create a technology capability capable of supporting the business’s next stage of growth.
