Financial Accountant

The Opportunity:

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a large, complex North East-based organisation with a diverse portfolio of operations and a strong regional presence. This newly created Financial Accountant position will play a pivotal role within the central finance function, taking ownership of statutory reporting, audit management and financial compliance activities across a multi-entity environment.

Working closely with senior finance leadership, you will combine technical accounting expertise with business improvement initiatives, helping to strengthen controls, enhance reporting processes and support ongoing finance transformation projects. This role offers a broad remit, significant visibility across the organisation and the chance to make a genuine impact, making it particularly attractive for an ambitious qualified accountant seeking increased responsibility and long-term career development.

Main Duties/Responsibilities:

• Prepare statutory financial statements, including consolidated accounts under FRS 102
• Lead the year-end external audit process
• Act as the primary point of contact for external auditors
• Coordinate audit schedules, supporting documentation and information requests
• Manage the Group compliance calendar
• Ensure accurate and timely submission of statutory and regulatory filings
• Support corporation tax compliance and liaise with external tax advisers
• Prepare VAT returns
• Produce the monthly Group Board reporting pack
• Provide technical accounting guidance across the business
• Support balance sheet reconciliations and wider financial control activities
• Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy
• Contribute to systems development, automation and finance transformation projects
• Build strong working relationships with finance and operational stakeholders across the Group

You Will Be/Have:

• ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualified
• Strong technical financial accounting knowledge
• Experience preparing statutory accounts and consolidated accounts under UK GAAP and FRS 102
• Experience leading or managing external audits
• Strong understanding of statutory reporting and financial compliance
• Advanced Excel skills
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving capability
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
• Effective stakeholder management and communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
• Proactive approach to process improvement and financial controls
• Experience within practice, construction, engineering, manufacturing or other complex environments would be advantageous
• Ambition to progress and take on broader responsibilities over time
