Northern Powergrid owns and operates the network that distributes electricity to homes and businesses across the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire. Employing over 2,500 people, the business has 8 million customers and supplies 3.9 million properties via 60,000 miles of overhead powerlines and underground cables.

As part of Berkshire Hathaway Energy (BHE), the energy division of a US owned multinational conglomerate, Northern Powergrid is now embarking on a Digital Transformation which will modernise their systems and processes and enable them to satisfy the needs of customers and stakeholders whilst streamlining the employee experience. Creating a modern workplace which enables employees through the use of systems will be a key outcome of the programme. As a result, they are looking to recruit a number of roles that will be integral to delivering this programme of work over the coming years, including a Procurement Development Manager.

The Opportunity

The successful Procurement Development Manager will ideally be office based 3 days per week in either Penshaw (Tyne & Wear) or Castleford, with the option of 2 days' per week remote-working.

The Procurement Development Manager role forms part of the Commercial / Supply Chain structure  and the role is integral in  the successful Procurement and management of Northern Powergrid's Supply Chain.

The development of contract strategies that ensure they have a sufficient and fit for purpose Supply Chain is an ongoing requirement, and is of particular importance as they move into a new regulatory cycle.  It is essential that they develop Procurement strategies that facilitate delivery of their ED2 business plans through the execution of timely contract awards.

Key responsibilities will also include:

  • Developing Procurement plans that facilitate delivery of their investment plans through the management and execution of timely contract awards, considering factors such as Make vs Buy, aggregation opportunity, and market / supplier network
  • Regular contract reviews/market and supplier research to ensure that their contracts remain sufficient and fit for purpose through routine analysis and assessment.
  • Expanding and upskilling the Supply Chain, in addition to developing appropriate Procurement strategies to meet the increased demands driven by the net zero challenge
  • Contributing to cross business contract board meetings
  • Initiation of the tender process, including building a Tender team
  • Developing contract change proposals where contracts are not meeting business needs
  • Supporting contract variations where contract change or interpretation are a factor

 

About You

In order to be successful, the Procurement Development Manager must have an excellent knowledge of the Electricity Distribution Sector, the way in which it operates, and of the associated Supply Base. Northern Powergrid is open to applications from both experienced Procurement or Contract Management professionals.

You will also have/be:

  • Knowledgeable in contract and Procurement strategies with strong commercial awareness and well developed negotiation skills
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in Northern Powergrid business and Field Operations
  • Proven track record in Contract and Contractor Management essential, in addition to experience in negotiating contract claims and change proposals
  • Excellent interpersonal/communication skills and the ability to operate at a high level in addition to a proven track record of developing and documenting high quality proposals are essential
  • Confident in contributing to contract tenders, and the development of the associated scopes, specifications and management procedures
  • High level of IT literacy – to support the development of high quality reports and proposals
