The Company:

We are pleased to be supporting one of the regions most well known brands J. Barbour & Sons in their search for a Senior Supply Chain Manager. 

Founded in 1894 in South Shields today the 5th generation family owned business remains in the North East, with Barbour's headquarters located in Simonside, South Shields. Although it sources products from around the globe, Barbour's classic wax jackets are still manufactured by hand in the factory in Simonside and each year over 100,000 jackets are processed via the central, subsidiary and local customer service operations.

Barbour now has 10 of its own retail shops in the UK, and a presence in over 40 countries worldwide including the United States, Germany, Holland, Austria, France, Italy, Spain, Argentina, New Zealand and Japan. There are now over 5,000 products across the two seasons, and the collections now cater for Men, Ladies and Children.

Barbour have experienced significant growth recently and have embraced the move to a more ecommerce focused supply chain. Their Global logistics operation now involves hubs in the US and Germany as well as the main distribution centre in South Shields.
 

The Role:

This newly created role provides the opportunity to be involved in the leadership and development of a world class supply chain. Reporting directly to the Supply Chain Director the objective of the role is to provide the expertise and knowledge to enable Barbour to continue their growth trajectory through an efficient, effective global logistics structure

Some of the key responsibilities will be:

  • Investigate and develop new routes into the UK, ascertain the best way to provide excellent service to Barbour customers whilst ensuring costs are controlled
  • Set up new contracts and develop new relationships with shipping agents, 3PL partners and freight forwarders
  • Work closely with the category managers , provide them with options to use for transporting their stock rather than them having the responsibility for setting up agreements
  • Work in collaboration with the Heads of Distribution and Ecommerce, ensuring any new contracts are fit for purpose
  • Develop the relationships with the shipping agents and freight forwarders so that this becomes more of a partnership and a strategic relationship
  • Oversee both the inbound and outbound stock movements, be aware of the detail, able to spot trends and identify issues before they arise

The Person:

All senior manager at Barbour retain responsibility for the day to day operations as well as being able to operate at a more strategic level, the successful candidate will be able to balance these 2 aspects of the role. The successful candidate will also possess the following attributes:

  • Ideally experience within the garment industry, the business is very complex and it would be desirable for someone to be able to hit the ground running
  • Experienced in developing global supply chains, working with international shipping agents and freight forwarders as well as 3PL partners
  • Adept at forming and building relationships with both internal and external stakeholders 
  • Proactive and hands on in the face of potential issues, takes accountability
