Thomas Swan & Co. Ltd. is an independent chemical manufacturing company. With offices and warehousing in the UK, USA and China and a global network of distributors, they service the domestic and international markets and export to over 80 countries worldwide.

Founded in 1926 in Consett, in the North East of England – still home to their manufacturing facilities – Thomas Swan today produces over 100 products (performance and advanced materials) and offers an experienced and flexible manufacturing service.

The business has ambitious plans and the desire to grow profitability.  The strategy around this will be to drive efficiencies across the plant/production in the first instance.

The Role


This is a fantastic opportunity for an individual to join a long established and well respected business, in this newly created role.

The CI Manager will work closely with the SMT and take ownership for developing the CI strategy and plan which will underpin the sites wider strategic objectives. 

  • You will undertake a full process mapping exercise across the business and as such, will need to develop relationships with all departmental heads. 
  • You will build the CI systems and infrastructure and will need to engage, collaborate and positively challenge, holding people to account to ensure a long term CI culture.
  • Thomas Swan are looking for the CI Manager to really embed a positive and proactive CI culture and as such, you’ll champion projects, working with dedicated advocates around the business. 
  • There will be a degree of complexity added into your remit, given the batch manufacturing nature of the organisation and you’ll need to work closely with the R&D function in order to optimise processes through scale up of manufacture.

 

The Person

 

  • Candidates must have proven experience of working within dedicated CI roles (ideally across 2 or more businesses) and have proven experience in either the creation of a CI strategy/plan for a site or have experience of continually developing an existing plan.
  • You’ll have proven experience of engaging and collaborating with the business, embedding a CI culture
  • Candidates will need to have worked within batch manufacturing environments.  
  • Stakeholder engagement – the CI Manager will work in partnership with individuals at all levels across the business.  It is imperative you are able to engage, influence, challenge and facility delivery of the plan through the people.
  • As the CI champion, you will have the energy and enthusiasm to raise the profile of CI throughout the business.  
  • Candidates will need to have experience of using multiple CI tools (Lean, Kaizen, 5s, Gemba, Six Sigma, DMAIC) and have the ability to assess which medium is appropriate per CI initiative/project
