The Company

Lynemouth Power (LPL) is a fully operational 420MW biomass power plant.  A full conversion from coal was undertaken 2016-2017.  The £350M conversion included the construction of six new silos, development of bespoke, large-scale handling facilities at the Port of Tyne, reinstatement of a trainline from the port to the plant and a comprehensive overhaul and modification of all on-site equipment.  LPL began producing electricity from biomass in 2018 and have a contract to supply through to 2027. 

Lynemouth Power is part of the EPUKI Group alongside fellow generators Langage and South Humber Bank (GB) and Ballylumford, Kilroot and Tynagh (Ireland).  Lynemouth is the renewable flagship plant for EPUKI and ultimate owners EPH.   

EPUKI represents the UK interests of EPH, a leading European energy group with some 40 companies operating in the areas of electricity and heat production, from conventional and renewable sources, as well as coal extraction. The group is a highly knowledgeable and committed power sector investor who have the potential to expand their investments in the UK further.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will take ownership for the operational optimisation of LPL across a mix of existing turbines and auxiliary equipment and newly integrated modern technology including a complex and high risk biomass material handling plant at the Port of Tyne.  Working closely with your team, you will provide effective challenge and support to raise standards and expectations to maximise the performance of the plant. 

The Managing Director must combine a high degree of technical understanding of the plant, continuous operational excellence and a thorough grasp of operational impacts on financial and commercial matters.  He or she must develop short, medium and long-term strategies to ensure maximum reliability of operation.   The plant has a wide range of complicated engineering technologies, as such you will work closely with your Engineering and Operations teams to encourage and support the drive for asset optimisation and innovation.  You will also look to pro-actively plan for a major outage in 2021/22. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for site HSE performance and accordingly will set high standards of himself and others to maintain the strong safety culture already established.

About you

As a degree qualified operationally biased Managing Director or an Operations/Engineering Director looking to move into your first Managing Director role, you will have an extensive track record in optimising operational performance in a power or heavy process plant.  You will demonstrate the knowledge and focus to challenge existing operational and engineering practices to identify improvement opportunities and relentlessly drive them through to completion, supporting and enabling your teams to develop and innovate. 

Candidates will have extensive experience of leading functional site teams in engineering, maintenance, operations and health and safety and a proven track record in optimising cost and process effectiveness to deliver excellence.  The candidate will have demonstrated the ability to build high performing teams and formed a deep understanding of delivering organisational and cultural change.

Candidates will have the ability to communicate effectively at all levels, both verbally and in writing.  EPUKI is an entrepreneurial company; candidates must be adept at presenting and formulating robust positions.  With well-developed communication, you will have the gravitas to give confidence to EPH and key stakeholders, coupled with the ability to truly build an engaged workforce to enable Lynemouth Power UK to reach its full potential.
