The Opportunity:


Nigel Wright have been appointed to support the Bowes Museum with the recruitment of an interim Head of Transformation for a one year period.  The Head of Transformation will lead the process of establishing a new vision for the future viability of Museum, supported by a business model and strategic approach that will transform the organisation and ensure successful delivery of that vision.

Background:


The Bowes Museum stands on the edge of the historic market town of Barnard Castle housing internationally significant collections of fine and decorative arts.  The French style chateau became a registered charity in 2000 and in 2017 it became an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation.  The Museum in partnership with Durham County Council has been successful in receiving a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to support a transformation project to create a long-term sustainable and viable business model.

The Role:

  • Establishing a new vision and mission for the Museum.
  • Leading organisational change across all areas including governance, staffing and training, succession planning, commercial strategy, business planning and financial modelling.
  • Establishing, leading and being actively involved with external advisors and consults.
  • Leading on the creation of a new 2020 – 2025 business plan for the Museum in conjunction with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Managing and delivering the Resilient Heritage Grant for the Museum, in line with all applicable terms and conditions and funding regulations.
  • Ensuring all projects are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget.
  • Creating and maintaining comprehensive project documentation.
  • Working effectively with a range of stakeholders including Durham County Council, Arts Council England and National Lottery Heritage Fund.
  • Providing a variety of regular reports to trustees and other key stakeholders.

Person Spec:

  • Significant experience of managing people, projects and organisations through a process of change.
  • A strong track record of working at a strategic level within a partnership working arrangement.
  • Budget and P&L management experience along with competence of developing feasibility studies and business plans for investment.
  • Excellent communication and multi-stakeholder influencing skills.
  • Experience in the cultural sector would be advantageous but is not essential.  Applications from individuals from different sectors with the above experience are encouraged.
  • The appointment may be on either a fixed-term contract or day rate consultancy basis.
