Lisa's Blog - Life as a Recruitment Consultant at Nigel Wright

In order to portray a real representation of the culture here at Nigel Wright, we asked some of our Recruitment Consultants to answer a series of questions about their careers and about working at Nigel Wright. Our Principal Consultant Lisa Bird shares why she decided to join Nigel Wright, her favourite recruitment project since joining, the advice she would give to someone with industry background who wanted a job in recruitment, as well as what she would be doing if she wasn't working in recruitment.

How did you first learn about Nigel Wright? Why did you join? How has the company changed?

I first heard about Nigel Wright as they were a competitor when I recruited finance in Teesside, and they had a good reputation in the market. When I came to a cross roads in my life and career, I decided that I would either leave my current business and join Nigel Wright, or I would move to London. I felt I needed a life change so took the decision to move to London, but with the view that when I moved back up North I would join Nigel Wright.

I first contacted Mark Simpson about 6 months into my move to London, as I wasn’t sure I’d made the right move. We met for a coffee, and whilst a week later I’d gotten over my ‘London wobble’, the information Mark had given me about Nigel Wright and his approach just confirmed that it was the business I wanted to join when the time was right. 4 years after that first contact, I was ready to come home. I’d met up with Mark a few times for a coffee and it was always a non pressurised conversation, understanding where I was at in my career and life. I’d also kept contact with ex-colleagues who had joined Nigel Wright and whose opinion I respected. Since joining Nigel Wright, the business has met and exceeded my expectations.

What has been your favourite recruitment project at Nigel Wright?

Less than 12 months into joining Nigel Wright, I started working with a multinational food manufacturing business, supporting them with leadership level roles across Operations in the UK. As the relationship developed, we were then engaged on an exclusive basis to manage all their SLT recruitment within operations across Europe. I have played a lead role in the account management of this, both internally and externally, and whilst this has had challenging times, I have really enjoyed it. It has offered a great mix of account management and delivery – delivery being the part of recruitment I enjoy most.

What advice would you give someone with an industry background who wanted a job in recruitment?

Absolutely go for it. At Nigel Wright there is a good mix of ‘career recruiters’ and ex industry specialists. Whilst you might not have recruitment experience, I have experienced first-hand the value you can add - my knowledge of supply chain for example has developed incredibly quickly through working closely with Melanie Dallat. This is an excellent opportunity to change the direction of your career whilst still using the knowledge you have already gained. It’s not often you can completely change career but still add real value from day dot…but at Nigel Wright you can, and it doesn’t go unrecognised!

I think it’s also important to mention that Nigel Wright offers the opportunity to specialise in functions you may have never recruited in before. I’d spent almost 13 years specialising in finance recruitment, but when I joined Nigel Wright I joined the Consumer UK team recruiting across Manufacturing & Operations for food & drink businesses across the UK – a complete change but something I absolutely love!

What would you do for a career if you weren’t in recruitment?

I’d probably make cakes!! It’s something I started doing a few years ago, and before I knew it, I was making all sorts of cakes for different occasions. The skills don’t go to waste though as the team regularly benefit from my baking, and it’s also a great way to raise money for charity through bake sales at work.
