About SMA Nutrition

In the early days of the twentieth century, the proper feeding of babies who were not breastfed was a major concern of the pediatric profession. This is why Dr Henry John Gerstenberger decided he was going to develop an infant milk that was as close as possible to the very best food for babies – breast milk. Dr Gerstenberger based his infant milk on cows’ milk, which had never been successfully attempted before. In 1919, he developed an infant formula which was suitable for newborn babies and SMA was born!

For nearly 90 years, SMA Nutrition’s range of infant milks has grown and developed, and during that time, SMA has been at the forefront of leading advancements. In the 1970s, SMA Nutrition was the first company to develop a whey-based infant formula in response to the Government’s challenge to make infant formula closer to breast milk. Most recently, SMA has been the first to develop an alpha-lactalbumin enriched formula, bringing its protein balance another step closer to that of breast milk. This has enabled parents who are unable, or choose not to, breast feed their baby, to be confident that they are giving their baby a good start in life – and all the proteins, minerals and nutrients their baby needs.

SMA are the market leaders in producing infant formulas; almost half of mums in the UK and the Republic of Ireland choose to use SMA products.  As well as their ‘core’ products which are available from retailers, SMA also produce specialist ranges to meet the needs of babies with particular requirements, such as those with intolerances or sensitivities.

However, supplying a range of infant formulae is just the start of SMA Nutrition’s commitment to parents. The company is dedicated to research and development and continues to work very closely with professional organisations and healthcare professionals so that they can assist parents in as many different ways as possible.

SMA Nutrition fulfils their desire to provide extra support with SMA Careline. Consisting entirely of mums, the team answers hundreds of questions every week for mums, mums-to-be and dads. This service is in addition to the information that parents can gain by visiting SMA’s website, where they can also join the SMA Baby Club.
