About The Oil and Gas industry
Three quarters of the UK’s primary energy comes from our offshore oil and gas industry and provides employment for about 380,000 people across the whole of the UK, and as a result is one of the UK’s greatest industrial success stories.
The North East of England is home to a large number of engineering and manufacturing companies supplying products such as pipelines, remote operated vehicles (ROVs), fluid transfer systems and trenching devices to this thriving sector. Such companies are experiencing strong growth which yields considerable opportunities for talented operations staff. Oil and gas provides energy and essential chemicals for our transport, industry and homes, and earns valuable tax and export revenue to support the UK’s economy. The oil and gas industry includes the extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas and the service activities incidental to oil and gas extraction.
The UK offshore oil and gas industry also:
- has invested £150 billion over the last 25 years
- has paid £150 billion in taxes since the 1970s
- adds £4 billion a year to balance of payments
- accounts for one-fifth of UK annual investment
