Contract...

Contract work is another form of temporary work, however it is for an agreed period of time - normally to complete a specific project.  Contractors are not directly employed by the company they work for and therefore will not receive the same benefits as permanent staff. Consequently contract rates can often be attractive in order to attract the right skills required for a specific project.

Reasons for recruiting contractors

Companies employ people on a contract basis for various reasons including:

  • Support and assistance with a specific project
  • Continue to meet business demand during busy periods of the year
  • Cover maternity leave or other absences
  • To analyse an employee’s performance with a view to offering permanent employment

The benefits of contract work

The benefits of contracting are similar to those of general temporary work:

  • Contract work allows candidates to balance their commitments
  • A contract assignment can lead to a permanent position being offered
  • Candidates can get an insight into a range of companies and management styles by taking on contract assignments – increasing their range of experiences and their professional networks
  • Good rates of pay are available in certain key sectors
  • A good history of contract work will increase clients’ interest in candidates

Our advice

To have a successful career as a contractor it is important to maintain a strong and close relationship with both your consultant and the organisation to which you are contracted. Consultants are better positioned to represent you if they know about your current status and most recent experience. To learn more about opportunities as a contractor speak to one of our consultants specialising in this market.

Limited company

If you wish to work through a limited company, we recommend that you seek independent, professional advice regarding the set up and operation of such a company. This is particularly important in the light of the Government’s anti-tax avoidance legislation, IR35. For further information on IR35, visit the Inland Revenue website: http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/.

Visa

To be considered for temporary or contract roles, you must have the right to work in the UK. If you are not a British, EC or EEA national, we shall reject your application unless you have secured, or are eligible for, a UK visa. Unfortunately we are not able to assist you securing sponsorship through a UK company.

If you are unsure about your visa status for the UK, please refer to http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/ for further information.

Testimonials

I was impressed by Nigel Wright, and my consultant in particular. The brief provided on the business and the role was very thorough, supported by my consultant's understanding of the sector from his time at M&S. He offered support and guidance throughout the interview process and was always available. I felt confident that my consultant was working hard to ensure both parties were 100% satisfied, and the needs of each side were met. If I am looking to recruit for my own team, or for any future career opportunities for myself, I would talk first to Nigel Wright.
